Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute Names Cardiothoracic Surgeon Mehrdad Ghoreishi, M.D., Co-Director of Aortic Surgery and Medical Director of Cardiac Surgery Research

Mehrdad Ghoreishi, M.D.

Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute has named board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon Mehrdad Ghoreishi, M.D., co-director of aortic surgery and medical director of cardiac surgery research.

Dr. Ghoreishi specializes in adult cardiac surgery and has a special clinical interest in aortic surgery. He is highly skilled in both open surgery and minimally invasive catheter-based treatments of aortic disease, including endovascular treatment of ascending aorta, aortic arch and aortic root. He has the most experience in the U.S. in the performance of normothermic (normal body temperature) aortic operations as well as endovascular aortic arch and aortic root repair.

Prior to joining Baptist Health, Dr. Ghoreishi was co-director for the Center for Aortic Disease at the University of Maryland Medical System and associate professor of cardiac surgery. As co-director, he led a team of professionals who developed less-invasive treatment options for patients with aortic disease and developed and performed the world’s first Endo-Bentall repair for aortic dissection. This groundbreaking approach allows for the replacement of part of the aorta and aortic valve using an endovascular technique, eliminating the need for traditional open-heart surgery, which carries a higher risk of complications and mortality.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ghoreishi to our team of highly skilled and experienced clinicians, dedicated to the highest quality care,” said Dr. Tom C. Nguyen, director of minimally invasive valve surgery, chief medical executive of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, and Barry T. Katzen Medical Director Endowed Chair.

Dr. Joseph McGinn, chief of cardiac surgery and deputy director of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, added: “Dr. Ghoreishi is a wonderful addition to our accomplished and respected team of cardiovascular experts who work collaboratively to ensure patients receive the most advanced care.”

Dr. Ghoreishi is the co-inventor of two medical devices and holds multiple patents in the field of cardiac surgery. He is dedicated to imparting knowledge to the next generation of cardiac surgeons. He frequently presents at national and international meetings and is widely published in peer-reviewed publications. He has received numerous honors for his clinical expertise, research and teaching in the cardiac surgery field.

Dr. Ghoreishi earned his medical degree and completed a general surgery residency at Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran. After finishing his general surgery training, he joined the Cardiac Surgery Research Fellowship Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He was successfully matched in the Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery residency program at this university and was the first immigrant in the U.S. to get matched in this competitive training track. He served as chief resident during his cardiothoracic surgery residency and was awarded the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Denton A. Cooley Fellowship.

Dr. Ghoreishi’s patient care philosophy is to treat every patient like family. “I value the patient-physician relationship and the trust my patients have in me,” Dr. Ghoreishi said. “I strongly believe that every patient deserves personalized care and state-of-the-art treatment.”

Dr. Ghoreishi says that even after intervention, aortic disease requires life-long management and care by a team of experts that includes cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, cardiologists, nurse practitioners and genetic counselors. “I am excited to join Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute and collaborate with clinicians who are experts in their field to provide the best treatment options for every patient,” Dr. Ghoreishi said.

Dr. Ghoreishi will see patients at 8950 North Kendall Drive, Suite 600W, Miami, FL 33176.
