A Personalized Medicine Prehabilitation Intervention to Reduce Length of Stay in Elective Hip Replacement Surgery

Patients in elective surgery are at an increased risk for developing postoperative delirium, a known precipitant for dementia. A 2017 Penn Center for Precision Medicine Accelerator Fund recipient, Carsten Skarke, MD, explains his effort at Penn Medicine to use patients’ phenotypes to develop personalized exercise plans prior to hip replacement surgery. Such “prehabilitation” interventions have been found to have the potential to decrease the rate of post-operative complications, including cognitive dysfunction. Dr. Skarke is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Systems Pharmacology & Translational Pharmaceutics at Penn Medicine.
