Stephen B. Edge, MD, FACS, is the Vice President of Healthcare Outcomes and Policy and a Professor of Oncology in the Departments of Surgical Oncology and Cancer Prevention and Control at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Edge also serves as a Professor of Surgery at the University at Buffalo.
Dr. Edge was raised in Chicago, IL. He attended medical school and trained in surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. After a fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the University of Virginia. In 1992, he moved to Roswell Park where he served as Chief of the Breast Service, and Professor of Surgery and Oncology until 2013.
In April 2016, following a three-year appointment as Cancer Center Director at Baptist Cancer Center in Memphis, TN, Dr. Edge returned to Roswell Park in his new role within the Departments of Surgical Oncology and Cancer Prevention and Control.
Dr. Edge is active in breast cancer research, in techniques of surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy. He is also active in efforts to define and improve the quality of cancer care for breast and other types of cancer. His work involves research with large cancer registry programs and linking those registries to other sources of cancer treatment information.
Dr. Edge serves in a number of cancer organizations. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). He is also on the Board of Directors of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and on the Executive Committee of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). He is the past Chair of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) is on the Editorial Board of the 8th Edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual (published in 2016) and is the Editor-in-Chief of the 7th Edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual published in 2009. He is the past-Chair of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Journal of Oncology Practice.
