Meet Jim Conwell, proud Vietnam veteran and lung cancer survivor. Conwell was treated at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and is thankful for the leading-edge minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) he received. His surgery was performed by Dr. David Tom Cooke. VATS lung surgery is designed to reduce post-operative complications, and results in less pain and shorter hospital stays for patients, as compared to traditional open lung surgery. Only 25 percent of the lung resections in the country are performed by VATS. UC Davis Medical Center is a leader in VATS and extensively uses VATS to perform pulmonary resections for early stage lung cancer.
