In this video, Dr. Friedberg explains how surgery can be beneficial and explains intraoperative strategies to remove microscopic disease that can improve survival for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).
Each year, September 26 marks Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Treating a rare disease such as MPM is best left to a mesothelioma specialist. Joseph S. Friedberg, MD, Charles Reid Edwards Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is a world-leading surgeon in performing pleurectomy/decortication, a procedure that removes the diseased pleura while sparing a patient’s lung. This approach commonly leads to better quality of life and a longer survival.
In November 2016, Dr. Friedberg was joined at the University of Maryland by his former University of Pennsylvania colleague, Charles B. Simone, II, MD, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology, Medical Director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC), and one of the most experienced physicians in the world in using proton therapy to treat mesothelioma. MTPC is the first proton facility on the East Coast to have all of its treatment rooms equipped with pencil beam scanning, a technology that allows Dr. Simone to definitively treat the entire pleural lining with radiotherapy while sparing vital organs. In the first video in the Related Content section below, Dr. Simone discusses why proton therapy is particularly beneficial for patients with mesothelioma to control their tumor and minimize treatment side effects.
Drs. Friedberg and Simone are two members of a comprehensive team of mesothelioma experts in thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology and nursing at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC)’s Mesothelioma and Thoracic Oncology Treatment and Research Center.
