Michael Acker, MD, offers an examination of cardio-oncology and its history. A field defined not only by rare cancers of the heart, cardio-oncology concerns the effects of radiation and chemotherapy on the heart in the years following cancer therapy, as well. At Penn, efforts to avoid these effects have been incorporated into oncologic practice and cardiovascular medicine and surgery in such a way that the institution has become a unique source of expertise and research in this area. Dr. Acker is the Director of Penn Heart & Vascular and Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Penn Medicine.
