COVID-19: Effects on Senses of Taste and Smell

Alfred-Marc Iloreta, Jr., MD, discusses first-hand and anecdotal reports from around the world that cite loss of smell and changes in taste presenting as one of the first symptoms of COVID-19. Dr. Iloreta states that the high rate of incidence should be regarded as an early indicator of COVID-19, and that in many cases these symptoms are the only symptoms patients exhibit. He considers the possibility that the virus may cause inflammation around the olfactory nerve, or attack the nerve itself. Dr. Iloreta discusses the variance in the length of time symptoms manifest, and provides guidance for patients who exhibit these symptoms.
