Racial Disparity in the Incidence of COVID-19

Lynne D. Richardson, MD, discusses social, medical, and economic factors that contribute to the higher incidence and mortality of COVID-19 among African American and Latino populations. She outlines the underlying medical conditions, types of jobs, living situations, and social mores that may contribute to this disparity. She provides guidance to people of color, stating that fear is also bad for you and that understanding how the virus is spread is empowering. By taking simple preventive measures—on the job, in the home, or outside—everyone can reduce their risk.
