Samuel L. Oyer, M.D., assistant professor of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Medical University of South Carolina, discusses a technique used in facial reanimation surgery — masseter-to-facial nerve transfer — that can restore a patient’s ability to smile. The technique is demonstrated with surgical footage from a pediatric case. The surgery was performed to reanimate the face of the child, who had experienced facial paralysis after removal of a brain tumor.
