Aquilla S. Turk, D.O., a neurointerventional radiologist at MUSC Health, is principal investigator on the COMPASS trial, a head-to-head comparison of the direct-aspiration, first-pass technique (ADAPT), pioneered at MUSC Health, and stent retrievers for large-vessel clots. In this video, Dr. Turk discussed the preliminary findings of the trial. These findings were presented at the International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles in January 2018.The primary end point of the trial was functional outcome, and the preliminary findings show that comparable functional outcomes were attained by ADAPT and stent retrievers in stroke patients with large-vessel clots. Because of its simplicity, it is expected that ADAPT will also reduce procedure times and be more cost effective. Dr. Turk will present the full results of the trial, including procedural and cost-effectiveness data, at the European Stroke Organisation Conference meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden in May 2018.
