The corneal epithelium plays an indispensable though little-understood role in marshaling armies of healing stem cells from the limbal rim to the protective surface of the eye in the event of an injury. For the first time, a team of scientists from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Wilmer Eye Institute, and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has shed valuable light on that woundhealing process and the vital contribution of the c-Myc gene, with major implications for future research and treatment of a blinding disease known as limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). Their study was published in the February 2022 issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
