Juniper was born prematurely and her ductus arteriosus, an artery in her heart that normally closes after birth, didn’t close. This leads to a condition called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). 20 - 60% of all premature babies report PDA, which can lead to infant illness and disease if not treated. Dr. Frank Ing from UC Davis Health used a cath procedure to close it when she was only 1 pound, 3 ounces.
