Dr. Whitney Jones from the University of Kentucky in Louisville, and Jasmine Greenamyer from the Colon Cancer Alliance in Washington, D.C., discuss the article appearing in the February 2014 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, which describes the increase in young-onset colorectal cancer over the last decade. They note the need for a communication strategy focused on younger populations as well as the importance of a prompt and thorough evaluation of symptoms by patients and providers, regardless of age. Through igniting an earlier topic-based conversation between physician and patient, they hope to decrease incidences of late-stage diagnosis.
